Accident Reports:

A 4-inch high-pressure gas line was damaged by a crew repairing a water main break. A gas repair crew sealed the damaged pipe and rerouted the gas line. However, it took several days to repair the water main, and a stretch of road had to be closed during the repair work. Reports did not indicate whether the gas line had been marked.

The driver of a tractor accidentally ruptured a high pressure gas pipeline while helping a pickup truck owner out of the creek bed where he had gotten stuck. The gas ignited, and emergency crews managed to save the truck, but the tractor was a total loss. It's driver escaped injury, which local authorities called a miracle. The incident remains under investigation.

On December 28, 2004 three people were killed after a gas explosion tore apart a commercial building. More lab work is planned to determine the exact cause. Officials found a leaky coupling beneath a parking lot nearby after the explosion and say more tests will continue into March in an effort to determine what caused the coupling to leak.

A fire official stated that to repair the leak, pressure had to be reduced by 100 pounds, a process that took about an hour. A bulldozer operator hit a 6-inch gas line with his blade causing an evacuation of anyone near the area. The line was marked, but the inexperienced operator got too close, according reports. Firefighters were standing by while gas service personnel planned a method to repair the line without disrupting service to the area. If service had been turned off, customers would be without gas for up to 10 hours.

A severed water main affected water pressure to residents after contractors upgrading a water treatment plant broke a water main. Crews were able to find the break about forty-five minutes later and repair the break. With the loss of pressure, officials warned residents that minerals were dislodged in the water system, and that this would cause discoloration of water coming from the taps. They recommended running the water until it became clear again.

Construction
2004 - 2200m of 16” Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline were trenched on 168 Street in Surrey, British Columbia. The trenching/installation contractor required over 100 buried utility lines to be identified and marked for the trenching process to cross without damaging them. One Call Locators worked closely with the project managers to provide accurate locate marks for the 2 km work area. As a result of accurate locate marks the trenching process was able to increase productivity resulting in the timely completion in a safe work environment. 2004 - Shoring. As the province of British Columbia continues to redevelop existing commercial sites the need for deep vertical excavations increase.
	Modern shoring techniques involve soil nailing and tensioned anchors that require horizontal drilling into utility right of ways. OCL can mark and identify the depth of utilities in the work area so anchors can be placed so that damage to buried utilities is avoided. Using this approach the shoring companies have realized a huge savings through damage prevention.

Environmental
2001-present - Reclamation of contaminated sites. Soil and groundwater can become contaminated by numerous means. The source of contamination must be pinpointed, a site assessment must be completed. In most cases test drilling and/or excavation will be necessary to accomplish this evaluation and complete this task. One Call Locators have been engaged by many environmental organizations to identify buried utility lines prior to drilling or excavation on these sites. OCL will provide a detailed locate drawing outlining utility hazards to ensure the safety of other personnel working on site. We have over twenty years of underground utility locating expertise!

Utilities
	2001- present – Utility as-built verification. Utility companies do not want facilities damaged by construction activities. They provide the most up to date information available to them at the time of request. As the construction industry continues to expand, more and more new facilities are installed in the ground making it a task to keep information up to date. One Call Locators has been requested to verify utility as-built drawings and check for additional new or old abandoned facilities surrounding the work area. OCL will identify the buried utility with permanent markings so surveyors can tie in new lines and excavators can work safely in close vicinity to utilities such as fibre optics, electric cables and natural gas lines.
